Consumer Class Claims Against Alleged Health Ministry Proceed

Aliera Companies Inc. and Trinity HealthShare Inc. are facing a consumer class action accusing them of selling illegal health insurance plans under Washington law, even though they said they operated a health care sharing ministry, a federal court in the state said.

A proposed class sufficiently alleged that Aliera and Trinity, its now-defunct subsidiary, didn’t qualify for the Affordable Care Act’s state insurance law exemption for HCSMs, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington said Tuesday in denying the company’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

The Affordable Care Act’s exemption applies to tax exempt companies whose members .
